If You’re Not On Facebook….

November 21, 2008 – 11:59 am | by Daryl Tay

I was in Media & Popular Culture class tonight and we were talking about examples where not having a particular product and/or service, naturally excludes you from participating in an event.

Examples were not being able to vote on a TV programme (eg American Idol) if you don’t have a handphone and one that really struck me:

“If you’re not on Facebook, you don’t get invited to parties anymore”

This is definitely true for me, especially for student-run events and personal parties.

How true is that for you, and do you think it says something about society?

Some of the best parties are organised via facebook now.. makes the organisers work so much easier and cuts their effort down by 10 times and gives them 10 times more reach..

Well, depending on what type of events. Alot of other events and parties are still sending out invites via traditional channels. Have you seen ppl send out wedding invites via facebook? hmmm…

Anyway, i was arguing with a friend who’s not on facebook and she insisted that it is a waste of time to have a FB profile. :)

Last night, i was just thinking that I should really just pay the penalty for starhub contract and get myself a iPhone on singtel. I wanted to try out the app store and so many things that everyone is buzzing about and i can’t play with. :)

well. i dont think you’ll completely not get invited – esp if you’re a close friend. facebook just aids the process and perhaps jolts your memory (when looking through your friend list) on who you want at your party.

Actually this really depends on what kind of party it is. So far of my hundreds of friends on Facebook, only one has used it for a personal gathering (it was a b’day party btw).

The rest use it mostly for invitations to public events, product launch, after-exam party, parties for a larger group of people like maybe those from a certain curricular activity, etc. In other words, the events/parties I usually get invited to on Facebook are those that are public or even if it is private, doesn’t mind having friends of their friends come along. For real private parties like birthdays / farewells / house-warmings, my friends still use the traditional method of “SMSing” if you consider that traditional haha.

I agree completely. I have been invited to a few parties through facebook, and facebook only. I didn’t receive any SMS, phone calls or invitations in the mail…it was all solely done through facebook.

It annoys me so much because personal contact is just fading away. It also annoys me because it is a lot easier to say yes to a party on facebook and not turn up without letting the host know, because that personal contact is not there. People think they can get away with just not turning up, despite replying ‘yes’ to the facebook invite. In my opinion it is common courtesy to let someone know you’re not coming to their party!

@Trudy: True. Just last week I went for something and my friend said “It seemed like a lot more people were coming on Facebook”!
