Blog Birthdays
This past Wednesday was Pat’s third anniversary party for Blankanvas (we all need to have blog birthday parties) and needless to say, the woman knows how to throw a party!
I also belatedly realised that January is this blog’s birthday and looking back on my very first “serious” blog post that was posted the day of my first Digital Media Across Asia class and a lot of that wonder and excitement is still there. The unfortunate thing is there hasn’t been a whole lot of opportunities for me to put what I know into practice. That’s something I really hope to change in 2010.
I think 2009 was a great year for the blog. The focus on local content has been working out well and although my blogging frequency has gone down, I’m still pretty happy with the content I’m putting out. I’m very much experimenting with my writing style (you might have noticed some of my more recent posts are much shorter than usual) and it’s something I’ll continue to be doing in 2010.
So embarking on the third year of the blog, I really hope by the time it “turns three” there’ll be a lot more real world case studies and organisations that can be featured here (and in many company’s case study books) as successes we can take into 2011.

It feels good to be able to share opportunities with people today. Opportunities are great things. — C.C. Chapman (via Twitter)
As of Monday, I’ll be the new business analyst at Blue Interactive: The measurable marketing company (also newly awarded Agency of the Year by Marketing Interactive). There are plenty of reasons why I wanted to work for Blue, but that’s not where the story is. The story is in how I got the job:
Just over a month ago, Jasmine (from school) dropped me a Facebook message asking if I had heard of any job openings. I passed her an ad I saw from Vocanic (provided by Ingrid). In a couple of weeks, Jasmine became the new business development executive at Vocanic (and is having the time of her life, I might add).
Awhile later, she dropped me another Facebook message with a job opening at Interuptive (named “Next Big Thing” at the Marketing Interactive awards), where I then met Kevin, the founder. I really liked Kevin as well as what Interuptive was doing, but unfortunately Kevin was looking for someone a little more senior. Despite that, he gave me a list of digital agencies to check out (without knowing if they were hiring) and Blue was on the list.
The rest, as they say, is history.
And that’s the beauty of it isn’t it? I didn’t give Jasmine the link with hopes she’ll reciprocate. Neither did she do it out of an obligation to reciprocate, and Kevin certainly had no compelling reason to refer me to a competitor. But they did anyway and I could not be happier to start my career at Blue. I blogged about this more than a year ago, and it still stands true today:
There is something about people engaged in this space. A natural desire for community and exchange and sharing, even if the person giving doesn’t get anything out of it.
There really is something about the space that attracts a certain type of people, and I genuinely believe that if we keep doing this and looking out for our own, we’ll weed out the trash and truly pave the way forward.

On Tuesday, I checked my Feedburner account and was pleasantly surprised to see this:

RSS Subscribers
It’s taken me 14 months since January of 2008, but it’s finally happened. I suppose 100 doesn’t sound like much to many, but the idea that there are 100 people in the world who are interested enough in what I have to say that they want the content delivered straight to them really makes me feel fulfilled.
I’ve always said, the best thing about being active online is the community. Thank you, everyone who has commented, linked to me, sent my link to someone else, come for Social Media Breakfast | Singapore, Twittered or Plurked me or basically has interacted with me in some way to help me get to where I am today. I’d love to get some feedback though: what can be improved? What content would be really compelling for you?
If you’re curious to find out how you can get the latest content delivered to you instead of bookmarking and returning to this page, check out this handy guide for help.
Let’s hope the journey to 200 subscribers will be as fulfilling, and happen in a shorter amount of time!
[edit: Given previous observations on Feedburner, the numbers might fluctuate, but I suppose faulty data is better than no data]

Our fifth (and last) Social Media Breakfast | Singapore for the year, will be held this Saturday at the Samsung Store at Vivocity and you can find out the full details on the SMB|SG blog.
There’s no fixed agenda this time around, but it will simply be a great time for everyone to meet up and relax as the year winds down. If you’ve been supporting us so far, I really hope you can come down and have brunch with us for the last time in 2008 (and get excited for 2009!)

I’d like to join Prof. Michael Netzley and Mark to echo my support for Amelia’s nomination of the Social Media & PR Across Asia wiki for the 2008 Edublog Awards. It’s submitted for the Best Educational Wiki
I think our wiki is deserving of a nomination (and a win) because it is the epitome of crowdsourcing and collaboration, the very things that inspired wikis. It’s been maintained for over a year by over 100 students, but not by their efforts alone. We’ve reached out to the prominent figures all over Asia to get their input and integrate it into a comprehensive wiki for anyone to find out more about different social media usages across Asia. I daresay it is the most comprehensive resource for anyone looking to get a quick primer on social media in Asia.
Coming here to Canada for exchange, I’ve met people from all over Asia – Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, China, etc – and it’s amazing to see that our collective research really does mirror what actually goes on in their lives.
If you’ve seen or used our wiki, or even just like the idea of the wiki as a central informational tool, do give the wiki your support and drop a link to the Edublog Awards page and support the nomination!
[Disclosure: I am a contributor to the wiki as part of a course (Digital Media Across Asia) in SMU. I will also be teaching assistant for this course in January, and as such feel tremendously involved in this project and nomination!]

Taking a page out of numerous social media sites, this blog post has the sole intention of asking you to subscribe to my rss feed so you can get content delivered straight to you, and never miss a post!
If you have no idea what an rss feed is, I have a nifty little guide to get you started (complete with images). If you’re already subscribed, do you have a friend who’s into social media? Facebook? Vimeo? Twitter? Plurk? Or just trying to figure out this whole Web2.0 space? Why not recommend this blog to him/her?
Here are a few posts which generated some interest recently, if you’d like to pass them along:
Finally, if you do add me to your rss subscription, do leave a comment to let me know, and so that I can check out your blog too! Thanks!

Hi everyone!
I’m in New York right now before heading up to Canada. I do have a couple of posts in mind but they’ll probably not be as frequent as I’d like depending on internet availability, but do check back or subscribe to my rss feed if you can!
Meanwhile, Social Media Breakfast | Singapore has a home! Check us out!

In addition to being away last week, I also fell pretty ill, which pretty much took up any and all time and energy I had to do anything, much less blog.
One thing that I found interesting was that the Magnum advertising post generated a lot more talk than I thought it would both here and on Plurk. It surprised me not because I thought it was a bad post (though I worked on it on a weekend while away), but because it came out of nowhere, from the simple act of my colleague buying a Magnum. Just goes to show you can’t predict what people will talk about on the internet.
Working at a multi-million dollar TV channel (which is as mass media as they come) for the last month has been very interesting for me. On one hand it reminded me of my passion for music and youth, on the other hand the nature of the environment meant I was thinking a lot in the “mass media” setting than in the niche, web2.0 setting than I normally do. Is there a way to merge the two? Surely there is. I don’t have the answer to that (and maybe no one does yet), but it was definitely a very exciting month. The least “social media” month in 2008, to be sure.
Moving ahead, I’m leaving for Canada on the 24th of August and will be there till the end of the year on exchange. I’m really looking forward to checking out how their social media scene is like and meet some people, maybe attend a conference or two. If you have links to people or bloggers or companies embracing web2.0 there and wouldn’t mind sharing, do let me know. Greatly appreciate it.
And now, back to regularly scheduled blogging.

I’ll be overseas in Malaysia for the next two weeks (roughly) and probably will not be able to blog much. Do pardon my temporary hiatus! I’ll try to blog as much as I can but it probably won’t be as frequent as I’d like. Bear with me!

Yesterday was the Ping.sg birthday party and awards. You might remember me mentioning I was nominated for “Most insightful blog”, “Most insightful post” for “Are bloggers really influencers?” and “Best review post” for my review of Plurk.
The great news is I managed to snag both “Most insightful post” and “Most insightful blog”, so thanks to everyone who voted for me, and the people who nominated me in the first place.
It’s obviously nice to walk away with something and I’m glad the blogosphere in Singapore is beginning to read and recognise that blogs aren’t just Meepok Blogs about what I had for lunch. One thing I do wanna say is let’s be clear that the awards were only open to people in the Ping.sg community. By default that leaves out other great insight blogs like Michael’s and Priscilla’s. Let’s also not forget other content blogs like Vanessa’s, Kevin’s and Walter’s who post great stuff, but maybe don’t always have the time to engage with the people on ping.sg. After all, voting always boils down to a popularity contest.
Still, I hope this means more people are going to recognise the impact of social media and start bringing it into their lives, work and play, and hopefully we will see a much needed change locally in the near future.

(ps: The pictures and “fun” stuff will be up on my personal blog later. Stay tuned!)
